The secret to getting stuff done? UNCOMMON focus
I had the honor of speaking to the Chicago Office of United Real Estate this week about what it means to bring an UNCOMMON effort to the work we do. I’d like to share a bit of that talk with you so you can accomplish something great in your business today!
Did you know that our average attention span is barely that of a goldfish? Seriously, we are good for about 8 seconds before we start to wander. It’s no wonder we never get anything done with all the interruptions that barrage us throughout the day! I know when I set out to do the work before me I am easily enticed by the ding of my email or another idea that pops into my head – even if that idea will be good for my business, it IS a distraction in the moment! For example, many times when I write, I will think of a ‘to do’ of mine or another article idea or someone I needed to follow up with. I need to work hard to put the blinders on and focus on THE WORK in front of me. When we ‘multitask’, we actually end up slowing our progress.
Think of it like this. If you have ten nails in a piece of wood and hit each of them one time and then move to another nail, it will take you much longer to sink the nails. You’ll end up having a bunch of partially sunk nails and be standing there scratching your head wondering why nothing is finished.
I encouraged the United Real Estate group to focus on ONE NAIL AT A TIME.
Hit it again.
And again. Hit it with focus until it is completely sunk.
My challenge to you today is to be uncommon in your approach to your work. Focus and hit it until it’s done. Then, move on to the next ‘nail’ and and sink that one too.
